Xiaomi 14 Ultra Price, Front Panel Design Leaked; Tipped to Get MIIT Certification

Xiaomi 14 Ultra may be unveiled on February 25 during the global launch of the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro. The purported top-of-the-line handset has surfaced online multiple times over the past few weeks. The company has not yet confirmed the model but several leaks and reports have suggested details about the phone. Some key specifications of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra have been tipped previously. Android 15 Developer Preview 1 Released By Google: All You Need to Know

Android 15 is currently in development and Google on Friday released the first Android 15 Developer Preview to give software developers and companies an idea of what to expect from the next version of its open source mobile operating system. According to Google, Android 15 will improve device security while allowing apps to take advantage of flagship hardware including advanced cameras, GPUs, displays, and AI. Other components like Privacy Sandbox, Health Connect, File Integrity are also set to receive upgrades when the update rolls out to users later this year.

In a blog post on Friday, Google revealed that the first Android 15 Developer Preview is now available for Pixel smartphones. These builds are unlikely to contain new user-facing features or changes to the interface — they are intended for developers to test their apps on the latest version of Android that is still in development and are expected to contain bugs.

With Android 15, applications will be able to boost the camera preview's brightness via new low light enhancements, and control flash intensity precisely thanks to advanced flash strength adjustments, according to Google. It will also enable the use of a smartphone as a virtual MIDI 2.0 device using a composition app to control a synthesizer app.

Privacy Sandbox — Google's new system to enable developers to show targeted ads that claims to preserve user privacy — is also getting an upgrade with Android 15. Health Connect will also support "new data types across fitness, nutrition, and more", the company states.

Android 15 also contains new application programming interfaces (APIs) that can protect users from malware or changes to their files, by tapping into a powerful feature in the Linux kernel. Meanwhile, the next version of Android will enable support for partial screen sharing, allowing users to only record one app window instead of their whole screen.

The company says another developer preview is coming in March, and Android 15 beta releases will begin in April. Users who want to try out the upcoming version of Android can try out the public beta versions, but these are generally recommended to be installed on a secondary smartphone. Platform stability is expected to be achieved by June, which means that no new features or major changes will be made to the operating system beyond that milestone, according to Google.

Google, Meta, OpenAI and More Firms Sign Tech Accord to Fight AI Election Interference Globally

A group of 20 tech companies announced on Friday they have agreed to work together to prevent deceptive artificial-intelligence content from interfering with elections across the globe this year.

The rapid growth of generative artificial intelligence (AI), which can create text, images and video in seconds in response to prompts, has heightened fears that the new technology could be used to sway major elections this year, as more than half of the world's population is set to head to the polls.

Signatories of the tech accord, which was announced at the Munich Security Conference, include companies that are building generative AI models used to create content, including OpenAI, Microsoft and Adobe. Other signatories include social media platforms that will face the challenge of keeping harmful content off their sites, such as Meta Platforms, TikTok and X, formerly known as Twitter.

The agreement includes commitments to collaborate on developing tools for detecting misleading AI-generated images, video and audio, creating public awareness campaigns to educate voters on deceptive content and taking action on such content on their services.

Technology to identify AI-generated content or certify its origin could include watermarking or embedding metadata, the companies said.

The accord did not specify a timeline for meeting the commitments or how each company would implement them.

“I think the utility of this (accord) is the breadth of the companies signing up to it,” said Nick Clegg, president of global affairs at Meta Platforms.

“It's all good and well if individual platforms develop new policies of detection, provenance, labeling, watermarking and so on, but unless there is a wider commitment to do so in a shared interoperable way, we're going to be stuck with a hodgepodge of different commitments,” Clegg said.

Generative AI is already being used to influence politics and even convince people not to vote.

In January, a robocall using fake audio of U.S. President Joe Biden circulated to New Hampshire voters, urging them to stay home during the state's presidential primary election.

Despite the popularity of text-generation tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT, the tech companies will focus on preventing harmful effects of AI photos, videos and audio, partly because people tend to have more skepticism with text, said Dana Rao, Adobe's chief trust officer, in an interview.

"There's an emotional connection to audio, video and images," he said. "Your brain is wired to believe that kind of media."

From Dunki to Love Storiyaan: Here Are the Top 5 OTT Releases of the Week

The weekend is here and so are our binge-watch recommendations for the top OTT releases of the week. If you were expecting a lot of romance-themed releases for Valentine's week like us, be prepared to be disappointed. There is only one major Indian original release for the week – Karan Johar's Love Storiyaan, which is about six unique love stories, where love breaks free from the shackles of societal and cultural norms. Shah Rukh Khan's box-office hit Dunki made its OTT premiere on Netflix on January 15, without much of a pre-buzz. It's a heartwarming comedy by Rajkumar Hirani, which revolves around the subject of “donkey” path to entering a country illegally. Since the process is quite prevalent in the Indian state of Punjab, Hirani has rightly centred the film there. The Kerala Story has also finally been released on Zee5 after weeks of speculation. The controversial film chronicles alleged mass religious conversion of Hindu and Christian women in Kerala.

Among other post-theatrical releases are Prabhas starrer action-drama Salaar (Hindi dubbed version) and the Sci-Fi adventure film Dune, which follows a noble family that becomes embroiled in a war for control over the galaxy's most prized asset. The sequel, Dune Part Two, is slated for release on March 1, by the way.

If you want to give new international releases a try, you could go for Polish comedy Kill Me If You Dare, German heartfelt drama The Heartbreak Agency, Japanese suspense show House of Ninjas, or the second season of the Jordanian teenage drama AlRawabi School for Girls.

For those looking for fresh comic content, Taylor Tomlinson's third Netflix Special Have It All is now out. Here, Taylor speaks of her life post-breakup and addresses the age-old question: Can you have it all? However, I feel her previous two specials were way more entertaining than this one, which fails to recreate her previous style (or it's probably because I was fangirling a lot on her prior stand-ups and had way too high expectations from her next endeavours).

For documentary enthusiasts, Netflix's Einstein and the Bomb should do it. This docu-drama will take you inside the tortured mind of Einstein after he fled Germany. Get ready for a lot of archival footage and tonnes of melodrama.

Well, that's all folks. Happy binge-watching!

The Kerala Story

Where: Zee5

When: Now Streaming

One of the most controversial releases of 2023, The Kerala Story, is now available to stream on Zeee5. Here, you'll see Adah Sharma playing a nursing student brainwashed into converting to Islam, along with two of her friends. How she ends up joining the Islamic State, becomes an ISIS terrorist and lands up in an Afghanistan jail makes the crux of the story.

The film initially received a lot of backlash after it claimed that around 32,000 Hindu and Christian girls were involuntarily mass converted to Islam between 2016 and 2018, without solid proof. The promotional material was later taken down when the claims could not be backed by facts. The film stirred a lot of debates in the newsrooms, though.

Dunki

Where: Netflix

When: Now Streaming

Four old Indians in London who are terribly homesick and want to revisit their homeland but aren't having any luck with the British Embassy. Desperate to get back, they seek help from Hardy Singh (Shah Rukh Khan), an ex-army man who helped them arrive in London in the first place via the illegal “Donkey” route – a phenomenon where people enter a foreign country illegally via multiple stops in other countries.

In Dunki, you'll find funny scenes of people parroting English speeches to IELTS exam centres, emotional highs, and a sweet yet incomplete love story. Dunki made its Netflix debut on February 15, without much of a pre-buzz. The film marks Rajkumar Hirani's (3 Idiots, Sanju) first collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan.

Love Storiyaan

Where: Prime Video

When: Now Streaming

Karan Johar's Love Storiyaan was released on Prime Video on Valentine's Day. The series brings to the platter six unique love stories, where romance triumphs over all socio-political odds.

Here you'll meet a trans couple, cross-border lovers, the brimming romance of a Dalit activist and an Adivasi advocate, a love saga from Bangladesh's Liberation Movement in 1971, two radio jockeys from rival stations falling for each other, and an unlikely couple facing opposition from their daughters.

The anthology series is inspired by stories from the Instagram handle India Love Project, where you'll find love stories “outside the shackles of faith, caste, ethnicity & gender.”

Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire (Hindi version)

Where: Hotstar

When: Now Streaming

While the Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil and English dubbed versions of this Prabhas starrer are already streaming on Netflix, the Hindi dubbed version made its OTT debut on Hotstar just now. In Salaar you'll see a gang leader vowing to fulfil a dying friend's wish by battling rival gangs. If you are a fan of South Indian action flicks, Salaar is a good choice to consider for your weekly binge-watch – packed with violence.

This is me... Now: A love story

Where: Prime Video

When: Now Streaming

If you have an appetite for Hollywood gossip, chances are that you are aware of Jennifer Lopez's controversial love life. The American actress has been married four times. She is currently married to Ben Affleck, whom she remarried in 2022, almost two decades after their breakup.

In this one-of-its-kind documentary, you'll walk through Lopez's love life through her eyes. This is Me... Now is releasing alongside her first studio album in a decade, which has been titled the same.

Apple Said to Be Preparing AI Tool for Developers, to Compete With Microsoft's GitHub Copilot

Apple Inc., racing to add more artificial intelligence capabilities, is nearing the completion of a critical new software tool for app developers that would step up competition with Microsoft Corp. The company has been working on the tool for the last year as part of the next major version of Xcode, Apple's flagship programming software. It has now expanded testing of the features internally and has ramped up development ahead of a plan to release it to third-party software makers as early as this year, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

The new system will operate similarly to Microsoft's GitHub Copilot and use artificial intelligence to predict and complete blocks of code, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans are private. That simplifies the programming process for software development, potentially saving time and money.

Apple is also exploring the use of AI to generate code for testing applications, an often tedious process. Currently, Apple is pushing some engineers to try these new AI features internally as part of a “dogfooding” effort — when a company uses its own products — to make sure they work properly before releasing them to outside developers.

The moves are part of a broader push into generative AI and large language models, the technology behind popular chatbots like ChatGPT. Apple is playing catch-up with tech peers in this burgeoning market, but has promised to discuss its plans for AI later this year. That announcement could come as soon as June, when the company holds its annual developers conference.

Apple shares, which had been down as much 1.5%, briefly turned positive on the news. They were little changed at the close Thursday, trading at $183.86. Microsoft fell less than 1% to $406.56.

An Apple spokesperson declined to comment on the plans.

It's been an urgent undertaking. Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering, has told his teams to develop as many new AI features as possible for this year's operating system updates.

He's also tasked his lieutenants with drumming up features that use the technology and has made top deputy Sebastien Marineau-Mes a point person for the effort. Apple executives demonstrated the AI functions to the board late last year, with Marineau-Mes conducting much of the presentation, the people said. The Xcode work is being overseen by another Federighi lieutenant, longtime software engineering vice president Andreas Wendker.

Apple's next iPhone and iPad software updates — iOS and iPadOS 18 — will include a slew of new AI features, according to the people. The company is planning to tout the software, codenamed Crystal, as one of the most significant updates in the 16-year history of the iPhone.

It's also planning to bring some AI features to the next version of macOS, codenamed Glow. Still, Apple aims to take a gradual approach to AI development, with some enhancements not coming for years.

The company has explored other new AI features, including ones that would automate the creation of Apple Music playlists and make slideshows in its PowerPoint rival Keynote. Another feature under consideration is a revamped version of Spotlight, Apple's systemwide search feature.

The new version would be able to toggle between specific features within apps and answer complex questions based on data trained from large language models. LLMs, the technology that powers AI tools, is developed by bombarding software with a torrent of data.

Early designs of the Spotlight overhaul include using LLMs to answer more complex questions and the ability to tap deeper into apps to launch specific functions. The current version of Spotlight is mostly limited to launching apps, making basic web searches and pulling up information like the weather and sports scores.

Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive officer, said during his latest quarterly conference call that engineers “continue to spend a tremendous amount of time and effort” on the initiative.

The competition is mounting. In January, Samsung Electronics Co. launched a new Galaxy S24 smartphone line that weaves in Google AI features — offering a preview of sorts to what Apple is expected to do with the iPhone 16 later this year.

The company has also continued to hone its own LLMs to enhance Siri and services like AppleCare support. The company is looking to improve Siri's ability to answer complex questions accurately, and the customer service teams are trying to speed up chat and phone support. Apple is also heavily invested in integrating AI into its health features.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Series Update Fixes Display Issue, Adds Camera and AI Upgrades

Samsung has announced that it is rolling out a new update for its Galaxy S24 series smartphones. The update is considered to be a major one as it addresses several user complaints seen ever since the phones hit the market. Most prominent among them was a display issue which appeared washed out in vivid mode compared to last year's models. The South Korean tech giant has now fixed it with a new Vividness setting that allows better control of the colour depth in the display mode. The update also adds improvements to camera modes and the performance of artificial intelligence (AI).

Earlier, as per a report by Teknofilo, the company had said that the changes made to the vivid mode were intentional and aimed to “provide more accurate and comfortable viewing during use”. However, it appears the tech giant has now decided to roll back its decision and allow users better control over display settings. Revealing the update via a newsroom announcement on Wednesday, Samsung acknowledged that different users have varying needs, and said, “Based on your feedback, through an upcoming update, we aim to provide enhanced options and experiences across device display and camera.”

The update will add a new Vividness option that can be found in Display > Advanced settings. This option adds a bar that will let users have improved control over the intensity of the colour depth by sliding it left and right until the right amount of vibrancy is displayed. The setting has three different levels. At zero, the vivid mode remains in its current state, while pushing it will enhance the vividness to a level seen in previous year's models.

Apart from this, Samsung has also improved the camera system on the Galaxy S24 series devices. As per the note, improvements have been made to various camera modes including zoom, Portrait Mode, Nightography, videos shot through rear cameras, and more. These upgrades should improve the picture quality even further.

Finally, the update has also improved the Galaxy AI features on the S24 series smartphones. Samsung hinted at improvements made to the AI model, without specifying what they really are. However, it appears to be a technical upgrade that allows the AI to better understand contextual speech in different languages for the Live Translate feature. As per the announcement, the update will be rolled out to all users in the coming days.

iQoo Z9 BIS Listing Hints at Imminent India Launch; Key Specifications Tipped

iQoo is confirmed to launch the Neo 9 Pro model in India on February 22. The company may launch another model in the country soon as well. Leaks about the iQoo Z9 have surfaced online and the model has been spotted on several certification sites. The iQoo Z9 series previously was hinted at via leaked renders of purported models. Though the monikers have yet to be confirmed or even teased, it can be assumed that as the successor to the iQoo Z8 lineup, the iQoo Z9 series may also launch with a base and an iQoo Z9x model.

The iQoo Z9 was spotted on the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) database hinting at an imminent India launch, a MySmartPrice report claimed. Not much was revealed in this listing but the phone was seen with the model number I2302, which is similar to the Bluetooth SIG listing. The iQoo Z9 handset is said to support Bluetooth 5.3 and 5G connectivity, as per the listing.

Tipster Digital Chat Station suggested in a Weibo post that the purported iQoo Z9 may launch with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 SoC. He added that the phone is expected to carry an OLED panel with a resolution of 1.5K and pack a 6,000mAh battery. If true, these will be considerable upgrades over the preceding iQoo Z8 model.

The iQoo Z8 features a 6.64-inch IPS full-HD+ (2400 x 1080 pixels) LCD screen, a MediaTek Dimensity 8200 SoC and a 5,000mAh battery. For optics, the dual rear camera unit of the phone has a 64-megapixel primary sensor alongside a 2-megapixel sensor, while the front camera holds a 16-megapixel sensor. The model ships with Android 13-based OriginOS 3.0 and supports 120W wired Ultra-Flash Charging.

The iQoo Z9 series was previously seen with leaked design renders showing two models. The leak did not clarify the monikers of the lineup, but it may include a base iQoo Z9 model and an iQoo Z9x model, succeeding the iQoo Z8 and iQoo Z8x handsets. The leaked models were seen with a textured, gradient light blue back panel. Both phones appeared to sport OIS-supported dual rear camera units - one with circular camera modules, while the other showed square-shaped camera modules. We can expect to learn more about these handsets over the next few weeks.

We Tried Google’s Gemini AI Chatbot and Found It to Be More Capable but Still Prone to Hallucinations

Google has come a long way with its generative artificial intelligence (AI) offerings. One year ago, when the tech giant first unveiled its AI assistant, Bard, it became a fiasco as it made a factual error answering a question regarding the James Webb Space Telescope. Since then, the tech giant has improved the chatbot's responses, added a feedback mechanism to check the source behind the responses, and more. But the biggest upgrade came when the company changed the large language model (LLM), powering the chatbot from Pathways Language Model 2 (PaLM 2) to Gemini in December 2023.

The company called Gemini AI its most powered language model so far. It also added AI image generation capability to the chatbot, taking it multimodal, and even renamed it Gemini. But just how much of a jump is it for the AI chatbot? Can it now compete with Microsoft Copilot, which is based on GPT-4 and has capabilities? And what about the instances of AI hallucination (a phenomenon where AI responds with false or non-existent information as facts)? We decided to find out.

Google AI can currently be accessed in multiple ways. Google Advanced is a paid subscription with the Google One AI Premium plan that charges Rs. 1,950 monthly. There is an Android app of Google Gemini as well. However, it is not yet available in India. Google Pixel 8 Pro also comes with the Gemini Nano model. For our testing purposes, we decided to use Google's Gemini Pro-powered web portal, which is available in more than 230 countries and territories and is free to use.

Google Gemini's generative capabilities

The website's user interface remains the same, but the name has been changed from Bard to Gemini. If you're signed in with your Google account, the AI will welcome you with your name and ask, “How can I help you today?” Underneath are a few helpful, prompt suggestions highlighting different tasks it can perform.

First, we asked it to write an email to test its basic generative skills. Considering it is the layoff season, we asked it to “draft a sympathetic email to an employee from a manager informing them that they have been laid off.” To test its performance, we told Copilot to do the same. We found Gemini's response to be rather bland and robotic, trying to fit in too much information right at the beginning. The first paragraph said, “It is with great regret that I write to inform you about a difficult decision we've had to make at [Company Name]. Due to [reason], we are required to make reductions in our workforce, and your position will be eliminated, effective [date].”

In comparison, Copilot's response felt more sympathetic and humane. It wrote, “I hope this email finds you well. I regret to inform you that due to recent organizational changes, we have had to make some difficult decisions. Unfortunately, your position at [Company Name] has been affected, and I am deeply saddened to let you know that you have been laid off.”

It shouldn't come as a surprise since Google's chatbot is known for being a bit too bland with formal content generation, and this has not changed even with the Gemini model. However, when it comes to informal content generation, Gemini begins to show its capabilities.

We asked both the chatbots to “write a letter informing my mother about me getting laid off and Write a short note to my mother explaining that I was laid off. Make sure to convey my emotions of sadness and grief.”

Copilot took it literally and wrote, “The suddenness of it all has left me feeling a mix of emotions—sadness, grief, and a touch of uncertainty about what lies ahead.” But Google understood the underlying message and did a much better job at expressing the emotions. It wrote, “I know you always worried about job security, and I wish I could tell you this was different. It wasn't anything I did wrong, they're [reason]. I'm trying to stay positive, but it's hard not to feel discouraged. I don't want you to worry too much, though. I'm not panicking, and I'm already starting to think about my next steps.”

This was much better composed, and one could be forgiven for thinking a real human wrote it. We conducted a few more tests, and Gemini's responses were much more balanced each time than the GPT-4-powered Copilot.

Google Gemini's accuracy

The next test was to check the accuracy of the AI model. Many use AI to get an answer to a query, and we wanted to do the same. It handled static general knowledge-based questions well. Even when we sent a few grey-zone questions, it stuck to the facts and did not include any extra information. When the questions were controversial, it refused to answer them, which is what you would expect from a responsible AI chatbot.

The problem came when we asked it a popular trick question that has stumped the older generation of the chatbot in the past. When we prompted the question, “countries in Africa that start with the letter K”, it inadvertently responded with, “There are no countries in Africa that start with the letter "K" as of today, February 12, 2024. While situations can change over time, this fact has been consistent for a while.” For the unaware, the issue happens because the LLM it was trained on had the prompted phrase with the same response. Interestingly, this particular glitch is present on Copilot and ChatGPT, and despite regular reports, it has still not been taken down for any of the chatbots.

However, the problem of AI hallucination did not end there. We also came across multiple other erroneous responses by Gemini. When we asked, “Based on reviews, tell me the pros and cons of iPhone 15 Pro”, it responded with, “The iPhone 15 Pro hasn't been officially announced yet”. In reality, the Apple smartphone was launched in September last year. In comparison, Copilot fared better in technical questions.

Google Gemini in assistive tasks

Another skill most AI chatbots boast of is their assistive features. They can brainstorm an idea, create an itinerary for a trip, compare your options, and even converse with you. We started by asking it to make an itinerary for a 5-day trip to Goa on a budget and to include things people can do. Since the author was recently in Goa, this was easier for us to test. While Gemini did a decent job at highlighting all the popular destinations, the answer was not detailed and not much different from any travel website. One positive of this is that the chatbot will likely not suggest anything incorrect.

On the other hand, I was impressed by Copilot's exhaustive response that included hidden gems and even the names of cuisines one should try. We repeated the test with different variations, but the result remained consistent.

Next, we asked, “I live in India. Should I buy a subscription to Amazon Prime Videos or Netflix?” The response was thorough and included various parameters, including content depth, pricing, features, and benefits. While it did not directly suggest one among them, it listed why a user should pick either of the options. Copilot's answer was the same.

Finally, we spent time chatting with Gemini. This test spanned a few hours, and we tested the chatbot on its ability to be engaging, entertaining, informative, and contextual. In all of these parameters, Gemini performed pretty well. It can tell you a joke, share less-known facts, give you a piece of advice, and even play word and picture-based games with you. We also tested its memory, but it could remember the conversion even after texting for an hour. The only thing it cannot do is give a single-line response to messages like a human friend would.

Google Gemini's image generation capability

In our testing, we came across a bunch of interesting things about Gemini AI's image-generation capabilities. For instance, all the images generated have a resolution of 1536x1536, which cannot be changed. The chatbot also refuses to fulfil any requests requiring it to generate images of real-life people, which will likely minimize the risks of deepfakes (creating AI-generated pictures of people and objects that appear real).

But coming to the quality, Gemini did a faithful job of sticking to the prompt and generating images. It can generate random photos in a particular style, such as postmodern, realistic, and iconographic. The chatbot can also generate images in the style of popular artists in history. However, there are many restrictions, and you will likely find Gemini refusing your request if you ask for something too specific. But comparing it with Copilot, I found the images were generated faster, stayed true to the prompts, and appeared to have a wider range of styles we could tap into. However, it cannot be compared to dedicated image-generating AI models such as DALL-E and Midjourney.

Google Gemini: Bottomline

Overall, we found Gemini AI to be quite competent in most categories. As someone who has infrequently used the AI chatbot ever since it became available, I can confidently say that the Gemini Pro model has made it better to understand natural language communication and gain a contextual understanding of the queries. The free chatbot version is a reliable companion if one needs it to generate ideas, write an informal note, plan a trip, or even generate basic images. However, it should not be used as a research tool or for formal writing, as these are the two areas where it struggles a lot.

Comparatively, Copilot is better at formal writing and itinerary generation, on par with holding conversations (albeit with a shorter memory) and comparisons. Gemini takes the crown at image generation, informal content generation, and engaging the user. Considering this is just the first iteration of the Gemini LLM, as opposed to the 4th iteration of GPT, we are curious to witness the different ways the tech giant further improves its AI assistant.

iQoo Neo 9 Pro Camera First Impressions: How iQoo's Upcoming Phone Performed in Our Initial Camera Tests

The iQoo Neo 9 Pro is coming to India soon, and the company is already teasing the smartphone's key specifications ahead of its debut. This phone boasts several notable specifications, including a dual rear camera setup that comprises a 50-megapixel primary camera and an 8-megapixel secondary camera. It is also powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, which was launched in late 2022. When the smartphone is launched in the country next week, it is expected to compete with phones like the OnePlus 12R and the Nothing Phone 2.

I've had some hands-on time with the iQoo Neo 9 Pro, and I've been testing the handset's cameras for a few days now. Let's take a quick look at the upcoming smartphone's camera specifications. Unlike the more powerful iQoo 12 that the company launched in December 2023, this phone only features a dual rear camera setup. It has a 50-megapixel primary camera with a Sony IMX920 sensor and optical image stabilisation (OIS), paired with an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera.

The Textured mode results in images with more detail than the Natural mode (tap to enlarge)

You get three image-capturing modes on the iQoo Neo 9 Pro — Natural, Textured, and Vivid. As the names suggest, the first mode gives you the most colour-accurate images, while the Textured mode produces more detailed and sharpened images with warmer colours. The Vivid mode lets you capture photos with higher colour saturation.

While testing the cameras on the iQoo Neo 9 Pro, I found myself clicking photos using the primary camera with the Natural or Vivid mode for outdoor scenery, while the Textured mode is quite useful while clicking images of buildings or subjects where you need the camera to capture more detail. It also worked well when capturing indoor subjects.

Images captured using the primary camera and ultra-wide-angle camera (tap to enlarge)

The primary camera lets you take detailed images at 1x and 2x zoom. Colours are accurate when capturing images using the natural colour mode, but the Textured mode lets you get many details if you don't mind the change in colour temperature. There's also a high-resolution mode that takes 50-megapixel shots instead of the default pixel-binned images, which I'll cover in my full smartphone review.

On the other hand, the ultra-wide-angle camera on the iQoo Neo 9 Pro lets you capture images with decent detail, but there's some warping at the edges. This camera won't offer the same level of detail as the primary camera, and there's a difference in the colour temperature compared to the primary shooter.

Portrait images are clear, and the bokeh effect isn't very aggressive (tap to enlarge)

Portrait images captured with the iQoo Neo 9 Pro are pretty sharp, with ample detail. The camera interface for portrait shots shows that the skin enhancement features are disabled by default. The bokeh effect isn't too aggressive by default and can also be adjusted before and after capturing the image.

The handset also features a dedicated night mode, and it captures decent images using the primary camera. In a restaurant with dim overhead lights, the phone managed to capture a certain amount of detail, although there's a bit of softening, blurring and noise if you zoom in — especially around light sources. I'll also test the iQoo Neo 9 Pro's camera in more challenging low light scenarios in the coming days.

The built-in night mode can capture images of dimly lit rooms (tap to enlarge)

It's worth noting that these are my initial impressions of the handset's camera, which is set to launch in India next week. The phone could also receive software updates in the days leading up to its debut. Stay tuned to Gadgets 360 for a more conclusive verdict on the iQoo Neo 9 Pro's camera's performance, as well as its design, performance, and battery efficiency — these will all be part of the full review of the smartphone.

Apple to Settle Trade Secrets Lawsuit With Chip Startup Rivos

Apple plans to settle a lawsuit that accused tech startup Rivos of stealing its trade secrets related to computer-chip technology, according to a joint court filing on Friday in California federal court.

The companies told the US District Court for the Northern District of California that they had "signed an agreement that potentially settles the case," and that the agreement allows Apple to examine Rivos' systems and recover any confidential information.

Representatives for Apple and Rivos did not immediately respond to requests for comment and more information about the settlement.

Apple sued "stealth" startup Rivos in 2022. It said Mountain View, California-based Rivos had hired away dozens of its engineers and used its confidential information to develop competing "system-on-chip" (SoC) technology.

SoCs are integrated circuits with several computer components in a single chip, including central processing units and graphic processing units. Apple said in the lawsuit that it spent billions of dollars and more than a decade of research on its SoC designs and that they have "revolutionized the personal and mobile computing worlds."

Rivos denied the allegations and claimed that Apple had "sought to punish Rivos and any Apple employees who may seek to work there since the moment Apple learned about the promising startup." It countersued Apple last September for unfair competition.

Apple settled related claims in the case last month against six former employees who left the company to join Rivos.
